Basic Slovak course for Slavic speakers

Obsah 1. lekcie: V úvode Vám predstavíme abecedu, jednotlivé hlásky, dlhé a krátke formy a ukážeme si spoluhlásky s mäkčeňom, dvojhlásky, samohlásku ä a ô, taktiež rozdiely v písaní „y“ a „i“. Budeme sa tu sústreďovať na správnu výslovnosť a na prízvuk v slove. V závere hodiny sa naučíme základné frázy (pozdravy, zoznámenie sa, privítanie a ďalšie zdvorilosti vo formálnom a neformálnom styku).

Alphabet, pronunciation and basic phrases

Description: Firstly, we will introduce the Slovak alphabet, vowels: long and short forms and soft consonants, diphthongs, vowels ä and ô, as well as the differences in writing of "y" and "i". We will focus here on correct pronunciation and accent in the word. At the end of the lesson we will study basic phrases (greetings, introducing people, welcoming and other courtesies in formal and informal communication).

Obsah 2. lekcie: V tejto lekcii sa naučíme rozdeľovať slovnú zásobu do rodov podľa niektorých kritérií. Pozrieme sa na základnú slovnú zásobu muž, žena a rodina, rodinného stavu, prechylovanie slovnej zásoby pomocou slovotvornej prípony -ka. Dozvieme sa niečo o pridávaní titulov k menám. Naučíme sa profesie v mužskom aj ženskom tvare, a čo tieto profesie robia. Na záver lekcie sa zoznámime s frázou „Odkiaľ si?“ a národnosťami v slovenskom jazyku.

Genders, professions and nationalities

Description: In this lesson we will study grammatical genders and learn how to distinguish them according to some criteria. We will look at the basic vocabulary such as a man, a woman and family, marital status, and learn how to form vocabulary using the word-forming suffix -ka. We will learn something about adding titles to names. We will learn professions in both male and female forms and what these professions do. At the end of the lesson we will get acquainted with the phrase "Where are you from?" And nationalities in the Slovak language.

Obsah 3. lekcie: Naučíme sa sloveso byť, základné slovesné kategórie a ich zápor. Toto všetko sa naučíme pomocou fráz a cvičení. Používanie osobných zámen v oznamovacej vete je súčasťou tejto lekcie.

Verbs, verb categories and negation (negative)

Description: We will study the verb “to be”, other basic verb categories and their negation. We will learn all this with the help of phrases and exercises. Using personal pronouns is a part of this lesson.

Obsah 4. lekcie: Pozrieme sa na slovesá bývať a žiť. Kde bývajú ľudia? Ako vyzerá ich dom alebo ich byt? Aké miestnosti sú v dome? Čo sa v nich nachádza a kde sú tie veci umiestnené? Naučíme sa porozumieť inzerátom a aký je rozdiel medzi prenajmem, predám a kúpim. Na záver si precvičíme tvorenie otázok pomocou opytovacích zámen ktorý, ktorá a ktoré.

Housing and questions with „ktorý/ktorá/ktoré“

Description: Let's look at the verb “bývať” and “žiť“. Where do people live? What do their houses or apartments look like? What rooms are in the house? What items are there and where are located? We will learn to understand advertising and what is the difference between renting, selling and buying. And finally, we will practice questioning using interrogative pronouns ktorý, ktorá and ktoré.

Obsah 5. lekcie: Prídavné mená v slovenčine majú rody. V piatej lekcii sa dozvieme nielen to, ale aj veľké množstvo užitočných prídavných mien a farieb, ich použitie vo vetách a v otázkach. Naučíme sa počítať do 10, do 100 a viac. Ako sa opýtať na vek? Ako odpovedať? Koľko to stojí? Koľko je hodín? Aký je dnes dátum? Toto všetko v lekcii päť.

Adjectives, numbers, date and time

Description: Adjectives in Slovak have their grammatical gender, too. In the fifth lesson, we will learn not only that, but also a large number of useful adjectives and colours, their use in sentences and in questions. We will learn to count to 10, to 100 and more. How old are you? How to answer? How much does it cost? What time is it? What is the date today? All of these in lesson five.

Obsah 6. lekcie: Zoznámime sa s miestami v meste. Naučíme sa, ako požiadať o pomoc pri hľadaní konkrétneho miesta v meste, naučíme sa porozumieť inštrukciám ako choďte vpravo/vľavo atď. Dozviete sa aké koncovky sú v slovách v lokáli, kedy a s ktorými predložkami ho používame. Všetko si to spolu precvičíme.

City and place, 6th case Local

Description: Let's get to know the places in the city. We will learn how to ask for help and find a specific place in the city, we will learn to understand the instructions on how to go right / left, etc. You will find out what endings are in the words in the local, when and which prepositions we use it with. We'll practice it all together.

Obsah 7. lekcie: V tejto lekcii sa naučíme časovať sloveso robiť a ďalšie slovesá, ktoré súvisia s dennou rutinou (vstávať, raňajkovať atď.), taktiež dni v týždni a frekvencie, ako často sa čomu venujeme. Zopakujeme si hodiny, keď budeme opisovať deň a rutinu. Naučíme sa použitie slov ešte a už vo vete, a naučíme sa to, že v slovenčine je v poriadku použiť po sebe niekoľko negatív.

Daily routine, my day

Description: In this lesson, we will learn to conjugate the verb “to do” and other verbs that are related to the daily routine (get up, have breakfast, etc.), as well as the days of the week and the frequency with which we do something. We will repeat the time as we describe the day and routine. We will learn to use words in the sentence, and we will learn that in Slovak it is okay to use several negatives one after the other.

Obsah 8. lekcie: Začneme opakovaním rodov, predstavíme si plurál podstatných mien v strednom, ženskom a mužskom rode. Zopakujeme si rozdelenie spoluhlások na mäkké a tvrdé. Všetko si dobre precvičíme. Na záver hodiny sa naučíme, čo sú plurália tantum a národnosti v pluráli.

Plural of nouns

Description: We will start with the revision of genders and continue towards the new topic: plural of nouns in their neutrum, feminine and masculine forms. We will revise the division of consonants as soft and hard. We will practice everything thoroughly. At the end of the lesson we will learn what tantum plurals and nationalities in the plural are.

Obsah 9. lekcie: Zopakujeme si plurál podstatných mien a pridáme plurál prídavných mien a zámen. Naučíme sa, ako používať čisla 2, 3 a 4, a že od čisla 5 je to všetko trošku inak. Ešte sme si nehovorili, čo je moje, čo je tvoje, kto je môj otec a kto je moja mama? Teraz sa to naučíme – privlastňovacie zámená a príbuzenské vzťahy.

Plural adjectives, numerals (2, 3 and 4) and possessive pronouns

Description: We will revise the plural of nouns and add a plural of adjectives and pronouns. We will learn how to use numbers 2, 3 and 4, and that number 5 changes everything. We will cover possessive pronouns my/mine, your/yours etc. and kinship relations.

Obsah 10. lekcie: V novej lekcii sa naučíme jednotlivé chody, a čo jeme počas dňa. Základnú slovnú zásobu (zelenina, ovocie, obchody, veľkosti), a ako požiadať o pomoc v obchode.

Food and groceries, shopping and shops

Description: In the new lesson we will learn the individual courses and what we eat during the day. Basic vocabulary (vegetables, fruits, shops, sizes), and how to ask for help in the shop.

Obsah 11. lekcie: Pozrieme sa spolu na modálne slovesá (chcieť, môcť, smieť, vedieť, musieť a mať). Naučíme sa ich časovať, použiť vo vetách a dôkladne ich precvičíme. Pri slovese chcieť sa naučíme aj podmieňovací spôsob pomocou „by“.

Modal verbs

Description: Let's look together at modal verbs (want, can, may, know, must and have). We will learn to time them, use them in sentences and practice them thoroughly. In the verb to want, we will also learn the conditioning method using "by".

Obsah 12.lekcie: V dvanástej lekcii sa pozrieme, čo robia ľudia v čakárni a aké sú základné pokyny, ktoré dáva lekár pacientovi. Ako môžeme povedať, čo nám je? Čo máme urobiť v lekárni? Táto lekcia je plná dôležitej slovnej zásoby týkajúcej sa tela, hlavy, inštrukcie v čakárni, u lekára a v lekárni. Na záver sa naučíme používať slovesá v imperatíve.

At the doctor's, imperative

Description: In the twelfth lesson, we will look at what people do in the waiting room and what the basic instructions the doctor gives to the patient. How can we tell us what is wrong with us? What should we do in the pharmacy? This lesson is full of important vocabulary regarding the body, head, instructions in the waiting room, at the doctor's and in the pharmacy. Finally, we learn to use verbs in the imperative.

Obsah 13.lekcie:V tejto lekcii sme v reštaruácii, uvaríme si niektoré jedlá a naučíme sa 4. pád akuzatív podstatných mien, prídavných mien a zámen, úvod do 7. pádu (inštrumentál) a použitie predložky ,,bez“ s genitívom.

In the restaurant, Let's cook!

Description: In this lesson, we are in a restaurant, cooking some meals and learning the 4th case of accusatives of nouns, adjectives and pronouns, the introduction to the 7th case (instrumental) and the use of the preposition "without" with the genitive.

Obsah 14. lekcie: Naučíme sa časovať slovesá cestovať, ísť, prísť, pomenovať dopravné prostriedky a použitie inštrumentálu. Zopakujeme si akuzatív a pridáme navyše frázy v akuzatíve („idem na“ a „prídem o“). Naučíme sa slovnú zásobu spojenú s cestovaním vlakom, lietadlom, autobusom. Aké lístky si máme kúpiť na vlak a aké na autobus. Na záver sa pozrieme na príslovky a stupňovanie prísloviek.

Travelling and adverbs

Description: We will learn to time verbs to travel, to go, to come, to name means of transport and to use instruments. We will repeat the accusative and add phrases in the accusative ("I'll go to" and "I'll lose"). We will learn the vocabulary associated with traveling by train, plane, bus. What tickets should we buy for the train and what for the bus? Finally, let's look at adverbs and grading adverbs.

Obsah 15. lekcie: V úvode tejto lekcie sa pozrieme, ako to vyzerá na slovenskej pošte a ako mám posielať zásielky. Potom sa pozrieme na úrad a na základné informácie ako úradné hodiny, typy úradov, ako sa zaregistrovať a vyplniť formulár. Potom sa dostaneme na políciu a naučíme sa dôležité frázy v núdzových situáciách. V závere lekcie sa dozvieme viac o genitíve, zopakujeme si použitie predložky „bez“ a ďalšie formy a použitie genitívu.

At the post office, at the office and at the police station. Use of the genitive.

Description: In the beginning of this lesson we will look at what it looks like at the Slovak Post and how to send shipments. Then we will have a look at “the office” and the basic information such as office hours, types of offices, how to register and fill out the form. Then we will take you to the police station and cover the vocabulary in urgent situations. At the end of the lesson we will learn more about the genitive, we will revise the use of the preposition "without" and other forms and the use of the genitive.

Obsah 16. lekcie: Naučíme sa tvoriť minulý čas slovesa „byť“ a slovies pravidelných aj nepravidelných, zápor v minulom čase a správny slovosled. Pozrieme sa na použitie modálnych slovies v minulom čase. Zopakujeme si dennú rutinu ale pozrieme sa na ňu ako opis dňa v minulosti. Taktiež si zopakujeme slová „ešte“ a „už“ a ich použitie v minulom čase.

Past tense

Description: We will learn to form the past tense of the verb "to be" and regular and irregular verbs, the negative of the past tense and the correct word order. Let's look at the use of modal verbs in the past tense. We will repeat the daily routine but look at it as a description of a day in the past. We will also repeat the words "yet" and "already" and their use in the past.

Obsah 17. lekcie: Čo robiť, keď si hľadáme prácu? Ako si napísať životopis? A ako sa prezentovať na pohovore? Aké informácie, vlastnosti a zručnosti je potrebné vymenovať? Naučíme sa rozumieť inzerátom a odpovedať na typické otázky na pohovoroch. Aká je štruktúra firmy? A mnoho iných informácií z tejto témy nájdete tu v lekcii 17.

Looking for a job, I need a resume

Description: What to do when looking for a job? How do you write a resume? And how to present yourself at the interview? What information, qualities and skills need to be named? We will learn to understand advertisements and answer typical interview questions. How is the company structure? And much more information on this topic here in Lesson 17.

Obsah 18. lekcie: Naučíme sa používať frázy „rád/rada“, „páči sa mi“, „chutí mi“ a opisovať vlastný voľný čas. Aké aktivity môžeme robiť, keď máme na to čas?

Free time. What do you like to do?

Description: We will learn to use the phrases "rád/rada", "páči sa mi", "chutí mi", and describe your free time. What activities can we do when we have time?

Obsah 19. lekcie: Ukážeme si, ako vytvoriť budúci čas slovesa byť, ďalších slovies (napr. ísť, chodiť, prísť a odísť), ako urobíme zápor v budúcom čase a každú oblasť precvičíme. Prečítame si vhodné texty, naplánujeme týždeň a dáme si nejaké predsavzatia. 

Lesson 19: Future tense

Description: We will show you how to form the future tense of the verb to be and other verbs (eg ísť, chodiť, prísť a odísť), how to form a negative sentence in the future tense and practice each area. We read appropriate texts, make a plan, and make some resolutions.

Obsah 20. lekcie: V poslednej lekcii sa naučíme stupňovať prídavné mená a časovať množstvo slovies. Všetko si to dobre precvičíme.

Description: In the last lesson, we will learn to grade adjectives and conjugate a number of verbs. We'll practice it all thoroughly.
